At first glance I doubt I would have guessed this was a museum, with the luxuriousness of the intricate gold detailing, but it’s the perfect entrance to the the beauty that lies within. To walk through Musée Carnavalet is to walk through the history of the city of Paris, housed in two neighboring mansions with a well-tended garden in between. You already know how much I enjoy these peeks into Paris of the past, and this museum is full of them, from renderings of the interior of Notre Dame before it became a huge tourist attraction to artifacts belonging to the royal family before the Revolution to paintings from another era of well-known spots throughout the city. As buzzy and modern as Paris is, it is impossible to escape the richness and complexity of its history, of which we are but small pieces and humble witnesses.
